MAHENO FARMS IRRIGATION DAM

The recently completed Maheno Farms Irrigation Dam is located northwest of Maheno, South of Oamaru in Northern Otago.

The dam was constructed on a small ephemeral watercourse and has been designed as an earth embankment across the downstream end of a grassed pastoral catchment of 120 hectares in area.

The crest of the dam is at an approximate height of 20 metres above the creek at the downstream toe of the dam embankment. The reservoir will store approximately 1.39 million m3 of water.

The dam is being constructed using onsite soil materials with imported processed filter and drain materials. Earthwork volumes for the dam construction will approximately comprise 200,000m3 cut to fill, 12,000m3 cut to waste, and 71,000m2 of topsoil stripping.

The dam was completed in early September 2010, and plans are to begin use for irrigation in the 2011 dairy season.

TE UKU WINDFARM PROJECT

Meridian's Te Uku Windfarm Project was undertaken as part of a joint venture with Spartan Construction in November 2009.

Hick Bros were responsible for completion of bulk earthworks, drainage, subgrade improvement and basecourse preparation for the construction of 26km of access roads to the turbine pad locations. And along with our Joint Venture partner we were also responsible for the subsequent completion of 28 steel reinforced concrete foundation pads for the turbines.

Bulk earthworks included 700000m3 cut to fill and cut to waste material, culverts ranging in size from 225mm boss pipe to 2300mm class 6 concrete pipes, 312000m2 of subgrade and basecourse stabilizing and 220000 tonnes of metal used on site. Bulk earthworks were largely completed in April 2010 and pavement construction and turbine pours were completed in August 2010.

The turbines have now all been erected and can be seen towering above the Te Uku hills.

AUCKLAND AIRPORT

Development at the Auckland Airport required the construction of a new terminal and runway to expand services.

The project required extensive earthworks to bring farmland next to the current airport facilities up to standard for the expansion.

Works completed on the project included:

  • 562000m3 of cut to fill
  • 147500m3 cut to stockpile
  • 205500m3 cut topsoil to stockpile
  • 10500m of 30mm, and 1650m of 150mm, slotted PE pipe herringbone subsoil drainage
  • 150mm concrete wingwalls and outlet swales

Work in this area encountered significant historical and cultural archeological finds and a research team worked alongside contractors on the project throughout construction.

CHRISTCHURCH EARTHQUAKE CLEANUP

Being involved with the Pegasus Town Residential Development, north of Christchurch Hick Bros services were readily available for response to the September 4th Christchurch Earthquake.

The team at Pegasus quickly responded to the disaster and lended a hand in the earthquake cleanup.

We were involved in works including;

  • Setting up a pump to pump raw sewage into the local river until the pumpstation was rebuilt, after it popped out of the ground about 750mm during the quake
  • Installation of new stormwater lines across a main intersection
  • Repairs to sewer lines

All our best wishes to Christchurch and its residents for a successful recovery and rebuild.

EASTERN TAUPO ARTERIAL

The Eastern Taupo Arterial (ETA) is a 16km highway that now runs along the eastern outskirts of Taupo, from Wairakei to Taupo Airport, and includes a bridge over the Waikato River.

Hick Bros commenced earthworks at the southern end of the route in late May 2009 and progressively moved north towards Centennial Drive with approximately 800,00m3 of earthworks completed by early December 2009, covering an approximate length of 10km.

The earthworks involved levelling the ETA route to provide a level base for highway construction with shared cycle & pedestrian paths, noisebunds, construction of two new roundabouts, one connecting the ETA with SH5 and another with SH1 and Anzac Memorial Drive, in addition to bridge abutments for the Broadlands Rd Grade Seperation and on/off ramps.

The eathworks were completed over one winter earthworks season and the new road is now fully functional.

PEGASUS TOWN LTD RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT

Hick Bros Civil have been the key civil contractor in the construction of the high end residential development, Pegasus Town Ltd.

Hick Bros have successfully completed earthworks, drainage, roading and landscaping, within tight time frames and budgets, from Stage 6 to 11.

Their contribution includes work in the heart of the development, Stage 8, which encompasses the town’s main street, lake, and recreation and retail facilities.

The construction programme for Stage 8 involved complex earthworks, including excavating the heated swim bay and lagoon, while working against high ground water coupled with sand soils requiring extensive drainage. It also required extensive civil works involving paving, concrete and drainage such as the innovative swale storm water system.

While all these challenges associated with stage 8 were being managed multiple other stages, with their own challenges, were being completed simultaneously. Hick Bros successfully managed these and stage 8 was successfully completed in November 2009.

The high standard of completion in all works met the client’s high expectations, as well as, Hick Bros vision of well built, on time, and on budget.

WESTFIELD ALBANY

Albany Westfield is located in the heart of Albany, and is the newest addition to Westfields group of Shopping Malls.

This major project included;

  • Cut to fill of 300000m3
  • One 22m high retaining wall
  • 84000m2 carparks
  • 88000m2 of lime stabilization
  • 15,000m of drainage, water, and service networks
  • 9 stormwater infiltration systems

Hick Bros were responsible for all earthworks and civil works and with the help of many other subcontractors completed the project in time for a pre-Christmas opening in December 2007.
