Hick Bros health and safety - our approach

Our approach to Health & Safety

At Hick Bros, we’re really big on our “safety first” culture. Although we work well within workplace safety guidelines, we’re never finished when it comes to finding ways to improve our own health and safety on site. Because when tools are down at the end of the day, we go home happy knowing everyone else is doing the same.

We invest a considerable amount of time and resource into building our safer working environment. And our bespoke prevention strategies continuously help our team stay in good health, while significantly lowering the risk of injury.

  • Health & Safety Performance

We treat health and safety performance just like any other facet of our business. We’re always trying to innovate. Hence why we invest in our team, helping them constantly improve their knowledge, skill, competence, and mindset.
  • Workforce engagement

To ensure everyone’s safety, you’ve got to have everyone onboard. Whether it be staff, subcontractors, or stakeholders, we’re always encouraging people to have their say on safety. It’s all about consultation, cooperation, and coordination.
  • Workplace culture

The best way to achieve a healthy and safe worksite, is encouraging a proactive environment. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and no matter their role, each person is afforded acceptance, respect, and equity.
  • Management Systems

As a proud listed supplier with Toitka, it’s easy to talk the safety talk. But we’re pretty good at walking it too. Our bespoke health and safety management is ISO 45001 certified, which means occupationally, we’re firmly within the best practice guidelines.

We do this through an integrated Management System alongside ISO14001, our environmental management and ISO9001 quality management – which means every site runs safe and smooth.
  • Risk Management

Before we’ve ever stepped foot on the site, our SLT team dedicate time and resources to ensuring all the risks can be identified, assessed, and overcome to create a safe and sustainable workplace.
  • Innovation

While our systems are accredited and meet today’s guidelines, if those guidelines change, we’ll change too. And if we discover new ways to reduce risk and improve our own health and safety, we’ll always develop and implement new plans of action.

Policies & Standards

Policies & Standards

When you’re working with large amounts of anything, you need to take steps to ensure everyone goes home at the end of the day. That’s why safety is embedded in our culture. It is an attitude of “all responsible” that starts from management and flow through the organisation. Our comprehensive policies are not only driven by industry and legislative requirements, but also our high internal standards.

Hick Bros is supported by ISO accredited management systems (45001:2018 Occupational Health & Safety Management, 14001:2015 Environmental Management, 9001:2015 Quality Management) and we are externally audited. We also work closely with clients and consultants to provide bespoke management plans.

Health and Wellbeing

Health and Wellbeing

Your worksite is only as good as the crew on the ground. That’s why preventative measures are at the forefront of all our business decisions. And it’s not just physical wellbeing. We’ve been working hard to break down the barriers that stop people from addressing problems with their mental health.

On the odd occasion where something does go wrong, we work closely with ACC and other healthcare professionals to provide rehabilitation, help and support to whoever has been injured, whether they be internal or external accredited professionals – ensuring no one has to recover alone.

Many lessons were learned on Harapaki, and the site team learned quickly and invested heavily into ensuring everyone onsite got home safely and without serious injury.

Following the devastating impact of Cyclone Gabrielle, our rural roads in Dartmoor were left heavily damaged and impassable, cutting off vital access for residents, farmers, and emergency services. From the outset, the Hicks team stepped in with professionalism, urgency, and genuine care for our community. The Hicks team has worked tirelessly to stabilise slips, and rebuild key sections of the Dartmoor road network. Communication was excellent throughout the process, and they consistently went the extra mile to minimise disruption to local residents. The quality of the repair work has been outstanding – built not just to restore, but to better withstand future events. We are deeply grateful for their commitment and expertise. Their efforts have been instrumental in helping Dartmoor recover and reconnect after such a difficult time. The Dartmoor Community recently invited the Hicks team to a Community BBQ in appreciation for their hard work, dedication, long hours and the respect and care they have shown to our community throughout the recovery process. We would not hesitate to recommend them for any future infrastructure projects. “

Contact Energy culture is to work collaboratively with our contractors while also trusting that they are the experts. Hick Bros fitted this mould very well and we appreciated their ability and enthusiasm to put forward new ideas to optimise the project delivery and outcome.

Emma Faulkner, Contact Energy

“[HBRC] were super impressed with our efforts to protect wetlands, RAPs and EIA. They said nobody else goes to this level of thought and effort and to see it across such a large & challenging work area was exceptional.”

Lloyd Clark, Environmental & Sustainability Design Manager speaking about feedback received from the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council.

Working within Contact Energy’s safety rules and standards, as there was some operational plant around the site, was an increase in safety requirements to what I would say the industry standards are. Hicks were very obliging to adapt to these requirements and had no hesitation bringing in the systems or equipment required to do so.
