Innovations
You can’t be around for decades without changing with the times. Our team is always looking for ways we can innovate. For example, to create a more seamless and paperless process on our worksites, we’ve developed an internal management app to assist in our vast monitoring and resource control.
We’ve also worked closely with Silt Control Solutions to develop the Autofloc Device that uses modern technologies and innovative design to treat chemicals with ease. In doing so, we managed to remove the majority of costs, health, safety and sustainability issues traditionally associated with chemically dosing run-off. A huge step forward in the industry.

Early contractor involvement (ECI)
We’ve always found that the best way to minimise cost, time, and health and safety risks is ECI. We’ve got experience working with clients and design teams from the outset to optimise the construction design, and manage unexpected scope changes.
The earlier we start, the more comprehensive our health and safety, environment, and sustainability management plans can be. This attention to detail also lowers the risks of potential clashes between the various contractors on site along with cost blowouts.

We’re really lucky to have qualified staff in every facet of our business. From some of New Zealand’s leading specialists in Geotechnical Engineering, to a raft of highly trained tradesmen on the tools, we’re able to collaborate and provide technical expertise in all corners of the site.
Our close relationship with design consultants and architects has also given us a ability to contribute from start to finish.

The project team raised risks ahead of time and provided solutions and costs/impacts for client review.
Many lessons were learned on Harapaki, and the site team learned quickly and invested heavily into ensuring everyone onsite got home safely and without serious injury.
Following the devastating impact of Cyclone Gabrielle, our rural roads in Dartmoor were left heavily damaged and impassable, cutting off vital access for residents, farmers, and emergency services. From the outset, the Hicks team stepped in with professionalism, urgency, and genuine care for our community. The Hicks team has worked tirelessly to stabilise slips, and rebuild key sections of the Dartmoor road network. Communication was excellent throughout the process, and they consistently went the extra mile to minimise disruption to local residents. The quality of the repair work has been outstanding – built not just to restore, but to better withstand future events. We are deeply grateful for their commitment and expertise. Their efforts have been instrumental in helping Dartmoor recover and reconnect after such a difficult time. The Dartmoor Community recently invited the Hicks team to a Community BBQ in appreciation for their hard work, dedication, long hours and the respect and care they have shown to our community throughout the recovery process. We would not hesitate to recommend them for any future infrastructure projects. “

Working within Contact Energy’s safety rules and standards, as there was some operational plant around the site, was an increase in safety requirements to what I would say the industry standards are. Hicks were very obliging to adapt to these requirements and had no hesitation bringing in the systems or equipment required to do so.
