Case Study: Patoka Culvert
At Patoka, our team recently completed the rebuild of a 3.2m diameter culvert to replace the cyclone-damaged culvert on Hendley Rd, but this project was about more than restoring the road. Its restoring access, protecting taonga.

Working alongside mana whenua, we designed and installed a bespoke, cast-insitu, fish ladder within the culvert, ensuring native species can continue their upstream journey without disruption. Healthy fish passage is critical for the resilience of our waterways, and for protecting the taonga species that call them home.
By combining engineering innovation with cultural and environmental values, we’ve created a structure that is stronger, more resilient to future weather events and better for the ecosystem it supports.
Scope:
- Installation of 15m x 3.2m diameter PE culvert within existing carriageway, including associated inlet / outlet structures
- Construction of bespoke fish ladder
- Installation of fish baffles within culvert
- Rehabilitation of carriageway, including subbase, basecourse and surfacing
- Construction of MSE wall
